Buy a BMX for Christmas

We at Belfast City BMX club want to promote the sport of BMX racing within Northern Ireland, but understand that it’s new to most kids and parents alike, and therefore can be confusing how to get involved.

Getting the right bike is critical, as there are many different BMX bikes, for street/ park, dirt jumping, flatland and BMX racing.

Although similar in appearance race bikes generally have aluminium frames for lightness, thinner tyres & a single rear “V” type brake & also do not have stunt pegs or gyros. The geometry of the frames is also different as they are built for speed rather than doing tricks.

BMX bikes are not “a one size fits all” bike & it is important to choose the correct size and type of bike. All too often we see youngsters on bikes that are too big or small & this can cause poor bike control.

Ormeau BMX Track

The club met with the Belfast city council parks today and they have told us Ormeau BMX track is open, After we pointed out a few issues they agreed to start the procedure to price the job to extend the finish-line and to provide an access path, the club has also expressed there concerns over safety, such as children riding the wrong way around the track and not wearing any safety gear especially helmets.

The club will now be able to apply to the council to have club training rides and community outreach events to help local children ride the track safely.

Race report from Lucan 19 April 2015

Eleven riders from three of N.Ireland's clubs competed at the first Irish National of 2015. Considering there are no completed tracks in the north, only a couple of pump tracks, results were good.
Starting with little Josh Hamilton, the lad was hanging with the best of his group however, some back luck in his final, left him in seventh.
The Mallon brothers both made B finals with Brandon finishing third and Bailey finishing first. Once Lisburn Bmx track is up and running these two will be up there with the best of them.

Jay Mackness, member of ECR, was riding well all day finishing with a sixth in the A final. Another great result.

The McGuffin clan were going well with Kirsty & Charlotte finishing fifth & sixth in their respective groups. The manager and father Gordon also raced well giving Mark Kennedy a run for his money, finishing second in the masters B final.

The older members of the clubs, Ian Hamilton, Howard Bennett, Geoff Lynch, Gordon McGuffin and Mark Kennedy all raced masters. Racing was tight all day with Ian Hamilton & Geoff Lynch making the A final with Ian finishing fifth and Geoff finishing seventh. Mark Kennedy and Gordon McGuffin made the B final with Mark winning and Gordon second.

Big shout to Howard Bennett, first race in 27 years and Howard was flying. Third in his first moto and sitting in second in his second moto, Howard had a bad fall which put an end to his racing for the day.

Although only two riders from Belfastcitybmxclub raced, we had 20 members and family down to watch and find out what bmx racing is all about, which everyone fully enjoyed.

All in all, a great day's racing and congrats to Lucan for such a well run event.

Old School

Some of the club members organised a ride out for Old School BMX bikes, what is old school? Well its the golden era of BMX 1980 to 1990 an era that was mainly race but the sport was ever evolving with freestyle. Some of the club are passionate about this and we all feel we can bring the popularity of BMX back to belfast.
Many had been put of by the cold winds but there had been lots of polishing of chrome and these bikes were cleaner than the day they left the shop some 30 years ago. You can see some of the bikes here.
