"Brighter Communities was launched back in April 2018 and each month it awards a £1000 grant to a community group or club who are aiming to roll out a creative and impactful project to help improve the community they live in.
Stephen McCully, Power NI Managing Director said. “Brighter Communities has been a real eye-opener in terms of meeting the wonderful group, clubs and organisations who are making a real difference to their local village, town, city or region throughout Northern Ireland.
“Looking back over the past 18 months our winners have been incredibly varied, from wheelchair basketball in Derry, bee-keeping in Clogher Valley and Omagh based cheer-leaders to supporting young people in care throughout Northern Ireland through VOYPIC, a lunch and music club for older people in Ballymena and our first winner, Olympus Girls, a community dance group in North-West Belfast.
“We’d like to congratulate Belfast City BMX Club on being our 20^th winner. I know that club members did extremely well at the recent World BMX championships at Zolder in Belgium and we wish the club every success for future competitions and ongoing club development.”
Belfast City BMX was formed to both ride and develop BMX facilities in Belfast and it also caters for cruisers and children’s stryder racing. The club which has 58 members aged between 5 and 50 plans to use their £1000 Brighter Communities funding to provide additional training sessions and purchase helmets for children participating in the sport.
Jonathan Reid Chair of the club said the club was thrilled with the Brighter Communities funding award, “The profile of BMX cycling has never been higher, especially with BMX Racing and BMX Freestyle being included in next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games. Our club offers excellent coaching and competition opportunities and we look to develop riders at all levels and encourage members to reach their potential.”
Brighter Communities seeks applications from small or large community, sporting, charity, youth and all age groups who can propose a tangible project, activity or item which can be realised or executed once the funds have been received and within an 8-week timescale.
Each month, the winning group or organisation has the opportunity to showcase their efforts and hard work through social media updates and reports outlining the project journey and ultimate successful actualisation.
